Near Miss: Weekend Awaiting a Hurricane
This weekend was my first hurricane.
I grew up in Tennessee, which is not tornado alley, but that Southern state gets its fair share of tornadoes. Those I’ve dealt with before. In fact, tornado warnings and watches were so commonplace, I joke that I spent half my childhood in the basement.

I Don't Wanna Be That Person

My apartment is on the bazillionth floor and is basically a single room and a giant fucking window. If that thing shatters, I’m diced.

10th Avenue Is
Streams of the same shade of deep yellow. Taxi, taxi, taxi, school bus, taxi, taxi, school bus, school bus, taxi, taxi. If you squint it’s a shimmering yellow river.
About eighty Navy men and women, dressed in their Navy whites, came marching down 42nd Street to the piers singing a chant about steamrolling.
It’s all crisp and windy and lovely down here by the water—I’m even wearing long sleeves—and the soldiers were all singing through their smiles.

The other day my sister asked me to move home because she misses me. We never talk like this to one another.
